Whittier - Whittier

The town of Whittier grew up around a military base built during WWII to allow safe harbor for ships in Alaska.  The depth of the harbor and the incredibly calm water made this an ideal location for the military, and today the harbor remains the most important feature of the town.  There are a number of activites that take advantage of the placid bay including kayaking, fishing, and (possibly the most appealing) a glacier cruise that promises that no one will become sea-sick.

The only access to the town is through a large tunnel constructed by the military to supply it's base.  Tickets for using this tunnel were relatively expensive.  So if you want to avoid getting sick spend the extra money and head to Whittier.
